The Beginning

Pokémon was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. The first games, Pokémon Red and Green, were released in Japan for the Game Boy. The concept came from Tajiri's childhood love of insect collecting.

The games introduced 151 original Pokémon, including famous ones like Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo. Players could catch, train, and battle their Pokémon to become the very best.

Global Phenomenon

After the games' success, Pokémon expanded to trading cards in 1996. The Pokémon Trading Card Game became one of the most popular collectible card games worldwide.

The animated TV series debuted in 1997, following Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu on their journey. Today, Pokémon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time.
